Day 1- Nairobi to Moshi (see detailed map) via Arusha for lunch, checked into Keys Hotel (great view of Kili.). Met with "African Environment" tour agent, for a trek briefing by candle light - electric is not very reliable here and the Hotels generator was also faulty. The Agent tells us 80% of visitors fail to reach Gillmans Point.
Day 2 - Drive to gate of Kilimanjaro National Park 6560ft ASL, meet Guide and porters. Walk from gate to Mandara Hut (9840ft ASL) through rain forest. Afternoon stroll around Maundi Crater.
Day 3 - Mandara to Horombo (12340ft ASL) After 30 mins walking we clear the rain forest and continue our assent through moorland. Kibo and Mawenzi peaks can be seen from here (very much in the distance!) after 6.5hrs reach Horombo.
Day 4 - Horombo - Kibo (15520ft ASL) Moorland gives way to desert, very dry and windy - take extra water. Bed at 6PM ready for assent at midnight.
Day 5 - Kibo to Gilmans Point (18650ft ASL) The assent is almost all scree walking, we set out at 1:15 it's -20C. Keep your water inside your jacket, not in the pockets (it will freeze). Arrive at Gilmans Point 7:30 am. Decent to Kibo and from Kibo to Horombo.
Day 6 - Route march from Horombo to Gate to collect certificate and shower!
