Volvelle

volvelle

If you know two of the following...

  • Date
  • Moon phase/ age in days
  • Zodiac or constellation that the moon is in

A volvelle will tell you the 3rd.

Basically a volvelle is an analogue computer used from medieval times, it consists of 3 circular plates, that are rotated around a common centre.

  • The back plate has the zodiac and the months on it.
  • The middle plate has the synodic cycle (27.5 days) on it and its pointer is set to the date of interest on the back plate.
  • The top plate, has a hole in it, this hole reveals the current phase pf the moon in graphical form, the pointer can be set to the age of the moon, revealing the zodiacal sign the moon is passing through, or it can be set to the zodiac to reveal the phase at that time.

Making a volvelle is easy! - I have done the hard work...

Recommended Method:

  • If you have 'Solid Edge 2D drafting' software simply open then print the attached 3Mb file using Solid Edge 2D.

Solid Edge 2D is Freeware!!! so google it!

Alternative Method:

  • Download the attached 54kb Excel file, this contains the images and a spreadsheet to calculate the angles of all the lines I had to draw!
